When you deliver a business pitch presentation, preparation is just as important as the product itself. This is a lesson we can learn from Alex Hall’s experience on Dragons’ Den.
Alex Hall goes on Dragons’ Den (the UK equivalent of Shark Tank) to pitch her olive snack business. While the product seems to fill a gap in the market, there are a number of problems with her pitch.
Ms Hall starts off sounding very nervous, which is understandable in a high-pressure situation like this. However, she is holding herself out as a professional businessperson and needs to find ways to help herself to appear more confident, even if she is feeling scared on the inside.
Her business pitch presentation quite quickly goes further downhill, as she makes sweeping generalisations and refuses to give the potential investors the information they need to make a decision. Telling the person to whom you’re pitching that the figures they’re asking for are not relevant is not a way to build their confidence in your business!
With some better preparation and more willingness to help the investors to understand her business, this could have gone a lot better for Ms Hall.
A well-structured pitch, backed by confidence and transparency, could have significantly improved her chances of securing investment.
